... As robbers put teachers in mourning mood
Primary school teachers serving in Andoni Local Government are wearing heavy, mournful looks while others joyfully celebrate the resurrection from the dead, of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The dream of the teachers to be part of the Easter celebrations was dashed Thursday, when unknown armed robbers struck at the treasury of the local chapter of the Primary Education Board at Ngo, headquarter of Andoni Local Government Area and made away with about N45 million.
Acting as if they are part of a network specializing in robbing councils and other parastatals at the grassroots, members of the gang who were masked stormed the office.
There is no trace so far of the money or those who took it.
They have simply vanished into thin air with their loot, leaving teachers in the area clutching the wrong side of the pole.
What is known is that the Education Secretary whose name was given as Allwell Uranta and his colleague in accounts Mr. God'swill who is said to be the Accounts Supervisor went to bank Thursday.
They got the money, but not early enough, suggesting that there may have been long delays at the bank.
Curiously the two functionaries left the huge sum in their office and went off for the Easter festivities.
With more facts coming to the surface, it is now known that the Primary School's Board at Ngo has no safe.
This has led to all kinds of speculation, with many in the area asking questions.
They ask why the officers did not leave the money with the police for safe-keeping given the long holiday period.
They also ask why the money was not deposited with the council which is known to have a safe capable of lapping up the amount of money allegedly withdrawn from the bank.
Most teachers simply think what is happening is merely a nightmare. Soon the pain would run deeper and deeper.
