Esele, PENGASSAN boss, emerges TUC President

The President of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), Comrade Peter Esele, has been elected president of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC).

The President of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), Comrade Peter Esele, has been elected president of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC).

He was elected at the 7th Triennial Delegates Conference of the association, which was held at the Lagos Airport Hotel, Ikeja at the weekend.

To emerge victorious, he defeated his only opponent, Comrade Gabriel Tiamiyu Babalola, who is the president of Food, Tobacco and Beverages Senior Staff Association (FOBTOB).
Esele polled a total of 68 votes as against Babalola's 66.

The incumbent President- General of the association, Dr (Mrs) Nkiru Peace Obiajulu, who had earlier indicated her interest to vie for a second term of office, later stepped down for the PENGASSAN boss.
Earlier in an address, Obiajulu had commended her colleagues for the support they gave to her while in office as the president general of TUC.

She said without their support she would not have achieved anything.
Her words: 'My leadership would have achieved nothing were it not for dedication, support and loyalty of most of my colleagues and officers to the cause of the congress. In appreciation, therefore, my office has with humility and sincere sense of appreciation decided to honour those comrades and friends without who the modest success of my tenure would have been a nullity."

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria was registered by the Federation of Trade Unions on September 9, 2005, thereby making it the second labour centre to be so registered. The first was the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
