The race for the grand prize of $10, 000 (about N13 million) in the Idols West Africa competition kicked off last Sunday as the show made its debut on DST's MNET channel against the backdrop of music, music and more music.

The race for the grand prize of $10, 000 (about N13 million) in the Idols West Africa competition kicked off last Sunday as the show made its debut on DST's MNET channel against the backdrop of music, music and more music.

Among those who may smile home with fame and fortune at the grand finale of the competition on May 27 are Confidence, daughter of former Super Eagles' goal tender and skipper, Peter Ruffian, Tayo, daughter of Captain Dele George, proprietor of Little Saints Orphanage in Lagos and a 25 year-old cripple, Karachi. For these and other contestants, it was the chance of a lifetime as they took their turn in the spotlight and sang their hearts out.

A global television phenomenon that draws millions in viewership, Idols is a headline-making dream machine that transforms its singers into superstars. Now with the auditions in Lagos, Abuja, Calabar and Accra completed, the show has hit DStv screens across Africa.

Episode one of the series is an introduction to the Idols story as presenter Mike Magic relives the excitement of the past few weeks as auditions for the show got underway. DStv audiences watched as Idols' judges Dede Mabiaku, Abrewa Nana and Dan Foster compliment and criticize the contestants, search for true talent and find some surprises along the way.

Episode 2 was screened on Monday, February 19 and audiences can tune in tomorrow for episode 3. In episode 4, which would be screened on Monday, February 26, the show will head to Planet One, Maryland in Lagos, home of Idols West Africa, to find the top 24 contestants.
DStv Channel 37 would focus on Idols and will be available to DStv Premium and Compact subscribers on the W4 and IS 7 platforms. Every day until March 4, the channel will offer approximately 16 hours of content daily, starting at 7a.m and ending at midnight.

According to Segun Fayose of MultiChoice Nigeria, Idols was produced for M-NET by Pan African Entertainment (Pty) Ltd/2wice As Nice Ltd. The headline sponsor for the series is Celtel and audiences can follow all the actions on DStv until the show's grand finale on May 27.
