Dare devil armed robbers in the early hours of yesterday reportedly looted the armoury of a police division in Lagos and released all the suspects in the cell, while leaving blood in their trail.
Reports say the robbers, numbering over 20, struck at Ajangbadi police station demanding for the release of their colleague. When their request was turned down, they shot the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) dead and broke the iron bars of the cell.
The suspects, who were over 15, ran out of the police station in a jubilant mood. When the bandits were about to leave the station, they broke into the armoury and went away with arms and ammunition. A sergeant who tried to disarm members of the gang was shot in the leg.
The State Police Spokesman, Mr Olubode Ojajuni, however, countered the claim, explaining that robbers only attacked a patrol team outside the station and shot a policeman dead. He said they did not enter the station, loot or set detained suspects free.
Daily Sun gathered that trouble started when a member of the gang was shot during a robbery on Tuesday night. The robbers rushed their injured colleague to a native doctor in the area for treatment.
Sensing that his patient was a thief, the herbalist alerted the police at the Ajangbadi of the robber's presence.
Cops stormed the native doctor's house and picked up the suspect. He was detained at the station at about 10p.m. Members of the gang came to the division shortly after asking for his release but the IPO, an Inspector of Police, turned them down.
The gang revisited the station at midnight, armed to the teeth. They went berserk and were said to have released all the suspects in the cell.
A resident in the area who lives near the division said that apart from invading the station, the thieves also broke into nearby shops. He said: 'We were deep asleep when we heard gunshots. I peeped through the window and saw young men in shorts running out of fire station. When we woke up in the morning, most of the shops in the area had been looted. They also destroyed the division beyond belief.
