Leave Obafemi alone, Oneya warns NFA

One time Nigeria Football Association (NFA) chairman, General Dominic Oneya (retd), has called on the leadership of the board not to kill a fly with a sledge hammer, following her threats to deal with Newcastle of England striker, Obafemi Martins, for not playing the friendly encounter against Ghana.

Oneya said given the fact that the player had made a public apology to the nation for missing out of the encounter, he should be left alone as he has realised his error and would make every effort in future to honour invitations.

The CAF committee member on the nations cup, said the NFA should rather concentrate her efforts in organizing more friendly matches for the Super Eagles on FIFA match free days to put the players back in shape and bring back the past glory of the country.

He observed that the drastic drop of Nigeria from 9th place to 36th on the FIFA ranking means that there is still much to be done by the present board to keep the Super eagles busy.

" Obafemi Martins should be forgiven. The youngman has realised his mistake and made apologies. His apology should be accepted with a warning that he should not repeat it. What should bother the board of the NFA now is the drastic drop of Nigeria from the FIFA ranking. The slide is a bad one which should be checked with more friendly matches for the Eagles.

"That we had not played friendly matches in a very long time before the game against Ghana had its effects on the players, because they have not been together for a long while. But I think more friendly matches on FIFA match free days would go a long way in reshaping the national team and at the same time, put the players in good frame of mind for future outing," he said.

Gen. Oneya called on the NFA leadership of Sani Abdullahi Lulu, to task the new technical adviser, Berti Vogts to use his office to arrange matches for the Super Eagles to improve the ranking on the FIFA list.
