Results of the November/December 2006 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) taken by 423,716 candidates were yesterday released with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) withholding the results of 50,065 candidates for alleged exam fraud.

Announcing the release of the Private candidate examination in Lagos, the Head of National Office (HNO) of WAEC, Mr. Godwin Uzoigwe, said 306, 716 candidates, representing 72.42 per cent had their full results while 66, 737 candidates, representing 15.76 per cent, had partial results released.

Uzoigwe, who said the November/December 2006 WASSCE was being released two weeks ahead of schedule, explained that the results of the 50,065 candidates, representing 11.82 per cent, are being withheld based on various reports of their alleged involvement in examination malpractice.

According to him, the reports on 50,065 examination malpractice cases are being compiled for presentation to the Nigeria Examinations Committee of the Council and that the committee's decisions on them would be communicated to the affected candidates.

The WAEC's HNO said out of the total number of candidates who sat for the examination, 48,966 candidates, representing 11.56 per cent, obtained credit and above in English Language, Mathematics and three other subjects.
Uzoigwe further stressed that 47 blind candidates sat for the examination and 21 of them obtained credit in five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
