Excellence, commitment, passion and vision will be rewarded tomorrow as Minister of Education, Mrs Oby Ezekwesili, receives The Sun Man of the Year award for 2006.
Billed for the Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Ikeja, Lagos, by 7pm, the event will be graced by illustrious Nigerians from all walks of life ranging from stakeholders in education, to politicians, industry captains, and indeed from all spheres of endeavour.
Expected to chair the event is Dr Doyin Abiola, respected journalist and former Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief, Concord Press of Nigeria Limited, while the Senate President, Chief Ken Nnamani is the Special Guest of Honour. Lagos State First Lady, Chief (Mrs) Oluremi Tinubu is Special Guest.
Oby Ezekwesili's choice for the award, according to Mr Mike Awoyinfa, managing director/editor-in-chief of The Sun Publishing Limited, was informed by her "strength of character, tenacity of purpose, uncommon humility, admirable public conduct, consistent and passionate pursuit of public good."
Also expected at the award ceremony as runner up is Master Detimber Chia, the schoolboy who led rescue efforts after he discovered the wreckage of the crashed NAF Dornier plane in Benue State last September.
Ezekwesili becomes the first woman to clinch The Sun Man of the Year award, which was initiated in 2003, and won by Dr Mike Adenuga, Chairman, Globacom, for his pacestting strides in telecommunication.
In 2004, the laurel went to Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for envisioning a new banking order in the country, while Malam Nuhu Ribadu, chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes commission (EFCC) won the 2005 edition for the uncommon courage and leadership demonstrated in the fight against corruption.
