A pregnant woman and some other passengers fell into the Lagos lagoon on Thursday when a commercial bus, a Mercedes Benz 911, popularly known as Molue, had an accident on Third Mainland Bridge.
The woman and two others were rescued but she was confirmed dead later at the Lagos General Hospital where the victims in critical condition were rushed to after the mid-morning accident.
Besides the three commuters who fell into the lagoon, several others were injured in the accident, which also involved a green Honda saloon car.
The driver of the Honda car marked CW 457 JJJ also suffered serious injuries and was rushed to the Ikeja General Hospital.
At about 6p.m. on Thursday, divers and some naval officers were still searching the lagoon for more victims.
Daily Sun gathered that the 911 bus marked XD 333 APP which was heading for Lagos Island from the Iyana Oworo end of the bridge fully loaded with passengers suddenly had a burst tyre and skidded off the road.
In the process the Honda car coming behind rammed into the bus.
An eyewitness further said that but for the railing on the bridge, the bus would have plunged into the lagoon.
When Daily Sun visited the scene, personal effects of victims littered the spot.
A heavy traffic snarl was caused by the accident and officials of the Lagos State Transport Management Authority (LASTMA) had a hectic time controlling the traffic. The two vehicles were later towed away to LASTMA office at Olowu on Lagos Island, while investigations are still continuing.
