But for motherluck, Joe Aikhomu, a younger brother of former military Vice- President Admiral Augustus Aikhomu [rtd], would have become history by now.

Joe, a Navy Commander attached to Warri Naval base, was on his way to spend the weekend at Irua, his home town last week when a drunken policeman shot him at a check point in Benin. He was drenched in his own blood but luck came his way when he was rushed by sympathizers to a nearby hospital for treatment.

He was later transferred to a private hospital in Lagos where he is still receiving treatment in the intensive care ward.
Admiral Aikhomu declined to comment on the shooting when his views were sought by Sunday Sun on phone.

'No comment", he simply said and terminated the call.
But Joe confirmed the incident when a call was put across to his mobile phone. He, however declined to go into the details, pleading that he was in a meeting.

A member of the family who simply gave her name as Tessy nevertheless painted a graphic picture of the life threatening incident.
According to her, Joe was stopped at a police checkpoint in Benin and asked to present his car particulars.

'But he was kept waiting for a long time, prompting him to make complaints over the unnecessary delay despite the fact that his vehicle papers were intact. Suddenly, a policeman who was drinking under a tree stood up and opened fire on him", she recounted
Sunday Sun learnt that the policemen was immediately arrested and is currently been detained.
