Pedro pledges to tackle crime

Lagos State Deputy Governor and Labour Party governorship candidate, Otunba Olufemi Pedro, has said that the party's government at the helms of affairs in the state would support a centrally-controlled police and equip the force to effectively curtail crime.

Pedro yesterday lamented the spate of violent criminal activities in the metropolis and the needless loss of lives and observed that the cosmopolitan nature of Lagos as Nigeria's financial and economic hub demanded creativity in tackling the expected high level of violent crime.

Said Pedro: 'Since the constitution currently empowers the central government to control the police, the immediate solution is to adopt the police in Lagos as the state police.

The labour government will give police in Lagos additional reward, incentives, new orientation and state-of -the- art gadgets and communication equipment to help in their effort to combat crime. Certainly, policemen and women in Lagos under a Labour government will be different from their counterparts in other parts of Nigeria."

The governorship hopeful said the streets would be rid of miscreants who would be put to work beautifying the environment with greenery. He sounded a note of warning to these prone to crime to leave Lagos as there would be zero tolerance for any anti-social behaviour.

He promised to partner with Lagosians to make the streets clean and safe, with all manner of illegal structures and abandoned vehicles which harbour malefactors removed. He equally promised well-lit streets.

He said this security initiative would form part of his holistic Lagos Strategic Transformation Plan, whose other pivots are economic empowerment through massive job creation, affordable housing through mortgage, integrated and affordable mass transportation, uninterrupted power supply, environmental renewal and social security system.

This, he said, would be achieved through the Labour government's provision of infrastructural support and the enabling environment that would help Lagosians to engage in productive ventures and the private sector to thrive.
