5 die in cholera outbreak in Delta

At least five persons have been confirmed dead in Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State following an outbreak of cholera in the area last week.

At least five persons have been confirmed dead in Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State following an outbreak of cholera in the area last week.

The Sun gathered yesterday that several others were on danger list at the various health centres in the council area as a result of the disease.

Unless the state government deploy more medical personnels, more deaths are likely to be recorded this week, health authorities warned.
Investigations revealed that health officials in the council area could not cope with the hordes of patients arising from the cholera outbreak.

For instance, at the Ugueze health centre, only a matron was seen attending to about 22 patients of the epidemic with no assistance from any other health official.

The Sun gathered that the outbreak of cholera was as a result of lack of potable water in the council area as residents had to resort to the Forcados River for their domestic use.
Dr Emmanuel Enegbere confirmed the outbreak of the disease, explaining that all the patients brought to the centre had traces of cholera.

He said five persons were brought to the health centre dead while several others were lying critically ill in various health centres in the council area.
An NYSC medical doctor posted to the local government area, Dr Emeka Onyeka, said they have been doing everything possible to bring the situation under control.

Chairman of Bomadi Local Government, Kelly Panawoei, confirmed the development and appealed to the state government to come to the aid of the council by depolying more medical personnels and drugs to the council area.
