Appeal court ruling on Obasanjo, Atiku feud, victory for democracy - AD chief
Bauchi, Jan. 13, 2007 (NAN) An AD chieftain in Bauchi, Alhaji Muhammad Sunusi, says the Court of Appeal ruling on the feud between President Olusegun Obasanjo and Vice President Atiku Abubakar as ''victory for democracy'.

Sunusi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) today in Bauchi that the judgement signified the independence of the judiciary in the country's nascent democracy. "The ruling added another hope for the survival of democracy and rule of law'', he said.

The party chief, who commended the court over the ruling, said the court had displayed a high sense of maturity and political acumen in handling the case. "The ruling was quite in order and signifies that there are still credible judges in the nation's judiciary'', Sunusi he said, adding that it confirmed that no individual was above the law.

Reaction -- 2 He commended the vice president for seeking redress in the court and urged politicians to emulate Atiku and embrace dialogue in settling their differences and show respect for the rule of law. "The action has clearly portrayed him as one who has respect and confidence in the nation's judicial system'', Sunusi said. A cross section of Bauchi residents who spoke to NAN expressed delight over the ruling. The respondents maintained that the ruling would bring sanity and cement relations in the presidency which would enable it to provide an effective leadership for good governance. Malam Usman Ibrahim, a businessman, who also commented on the ruling, said it signaled the end of a long-drawn battle in the presidency and prayed that it ushers in a new era in the polity.
