SUPER Eagles players are N3.2 million richer courtesy of the governor of Rivers State, Dr. Peter Odili for the 2-0 victory over the Panthers of Gabon in the World Cup and Nations Cup qualifier played at the Liberation Stadium, Port Hacourt last weekend.
Each of the players was given $1,000 each; while captain of the team, Austin Okocha got $2,000.
Governor Odili also presented Certificates of Occupancy for a plot of land given to each of the players which gives legal ownership to the land.
The presentation was in fulfilment of the promise he made to the players when they qualified for the Korea/Japan 2002 World Cup.
Announcing this at a state banquet for the victorious Super Eagles, Governor Odili described the feat as a laudable one, adding that the coach Christian Chukwu-led squad made Rivers State and the entire nation proud when it mattered most.
Odili explained that he would have redeemed his pledge for long, but could not as there was no follow up by the Nigeria Football Association until recently.
"I did not fulfil the promise since because there was no follow up by NFA. They started the follow up only recently," he said.
He, however, requested NFA to forward names of the new Super Eagles players who featured in the match against Gabon to enable him approve their own plots of land.
Garba Lawal, Kanu Nwankwo, Joseph Yobo, Abbey George and Austin Okocha who received additional one thousand dollars each for their leadership roles attended the "come together party."
