LAGOS (AFP) - Joshua Dariye -- the beleaguered governor of Nigeria's troubled Plateau State -- has been impeached after being accused of corruption.
A employee at the Plateau State government secretariat declined to deny or officially confirm the news report by the Channels TV station in the absence of the State Secretary, but said: "You switch the TV on and you will get the news".
State legislators had been due to serve an impeachment notice on Dariye, who is accused of corruption and money-laundering, on October 13. Police then opened fire on demonstrators protesting the move in the state capital Jos, shooting one person dead and seriously injuring another.
Four days later the state security council approved the deployment of troops and armed policemen to maintain order in Jos and its environs.
Dariye was arrested by London police in December 2004 in possession of more than a million dollars (780,000 euros). He jumped bail by fleeing to Nigeria.
