There were indications on Thursday that two ministers in President Olusegun Obasanjo‘s cabinet have quit to enable them to pursue their gubernatorial ambitions in the 2007 elections.

Their resignation comes on the heels of the expiration of the deadline for the voluntary resignation of all ministers and presidential aides nursing electoral ambitions. The deadline, issued by the President, expired on Thursday.

Those who have resigned are the Minister of Water Resources, Alhaji Muhktar Shagari, and Minister of Defence, Alhaji Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Both of them are hoping to become governors in Sokoto and Kano states.

Shagari, who was at the Villa to see the President, was quoted as saying that he was already on his way to Sokoto to commence preparations for the poll.

It was also gathered that the Chief Economic Adviser to the President, Chief Osita Ogbu, had already turned in his resignation to enable him to vie for the Enugu State governorship position.
