Vice President Atiku Abubakar has sought the assistance of the British Government in ensuring the forthcoming elections in Nigeria are credible, successful and devoid of any form of rancour.
Vice President Atiku Abubakar has sought the assistance of the British Government in ensuring the forthcoming elections in Nigeria are credible, successful and devoid of any form of rancour.
He did this in Abuja yesterday when he received a British Parliament's all party group on Nigeria led by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Richard Gozny in his office at the Presidential Villa.
Noting that it was the first time that Westminster would put together an all party group on Nigeria to oversee political and social affairs in the country, Atiku expressed the hope that 'the British Government will assist us with necessary logistics to ensure a credible and successful elections in 2007."
He said the visit by the members of the British parliament came at a time when the country needed the support and understanding of its friends and the international community because 'this is the longest experiment with democracy that Nigeria has ever had," adding, 'I hope that the elections and transition will be better than the previous ones."
The vice president also said putting together of the group by the British Parliament was a welcome development that was bound to strengthen the relations between the two countries
Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Mr. John Roberson who said they were in Nigeria at an important point in the history of the country to 'witness the transition from one democracy to the other," however, explained they were not in the country to tell the people what to do, but rather to offer suggestions and assistance on how to ensure a successful transition in the country in 2007.
