Plateau: Investigative panel suspends sitting… Over court's order

Chairman of the panel investigating charges of financial misappropriation brought against Governor Joshua Dariye of Plateau State, Mr. Mark Samci, has adjourned sitting till Friday in compliance with a court order sought by some members of Plateau State House of Assembly led by Barrister Simon Lalong.

The chairman, who made the announcement at the commencement of the sitting on Wednesday, said the sitting would commence on Friday after the substantive suit before the court would have been heard by Thursday.

A High Court, under Justice Y. I. Dakwank, had ordered that the seven members of the panel and the six members of the House of Assembly, under Mike Dapianlong, should henceforth stay further proceedings into the investigation of Dariye pending the hearing of the notice of preliminary objection and the substantive suit earlier scheduled for Thursday.

At the sitting of the panel on Tuesday, the chairman, Mr. Samci, had said that he was unaware of the court order for stoppage of sitting, urging the counsel to the governor, Mr. Pius Akubo, to make it available to the panel if he had such order.

The state Commissioner for Information, Mr. Yakubu Datti, described the decision of the panel as a victory for democracy while the counsel to the Mike Dapianlong-led House of Assembly, Solomon Umoh, said the decision would not affect the outcome of the investigation.
