A faction of the Anambra State House of Assembly has impeached the governor of the state, Peter Obi over allegations of corruption and abuse of office. The governor was removed by 5.00am and his deputy Dame Virginia Etiaba was asked to assume office as governor while the state Chief Judge was instructed to swear her in.
The legislators broke into two factions following the impeachment move on the governor and the two sides with their speakers lay claim to legitimacy to the lawmaking activities of the state. Obi took over post seven months ago after a court ruled in his favour and dismissed his predecessor, Dr. Chris Ngige for election rigging.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commision (EFCC) had indicted more that 30 governors under allegations of corruption recently but Governor Obi was not among them.
However, Obi has said that the impeachment cannot be effective because the members of the legislature that claimed to have impeached him are not up to 21 in number as they claimed stressing that 13 of the lawmakers are in support of him.
He claimed that some people want to throw the state into chaos for political reasons. The lawmakers who accused the governor of corruption and abuse of power had on Friday asked the state chief judge to appoint a seven-man panel to investigate him. That panel met briefly and purportedly submitted its reports, indicting the governor over the allegations.
