Mrs. Nneka Lawal, was speechless as sympathizers milled around her at their House Number 7, Oba Adejobi street, Ikeja GRA, Lagos.
She stared into space and found it difficult to utter a word. Benefactors of the deceased could not be consoled as they rolled on the floor counting their losses.
The Personal Assistant to the late Lawal, when he was a Deputy Commissioner at the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Panti, Mr. Segun Samson Oguntaye described him as a father.
He said: 'I can't believe that Mr. Lawal is dead. He was a visionary leader. He was a gentleman and a role model. I will miss his fatherly advice and kindness."
Another sympathizer, Mr. Mohhamed Lawal, an Inspector of police said he was still dazed. 'Is it possible for a loved one to die that way? I now know that truly, good people don't last."
Daily Sun gathered that the deceased had come to Lagos for the weekend and was going back to Sokoto, where he was serving.
One of his aides, who pleaded for anonymity said: 'Anytime oga was in Lagos, he used to call us. We did not even know that he came for the weekend this time and it was unlike him to visit Lagos silently."
Lawal, a native of Ibarapa Local Government in Oyo, was born on June 13, 1954. He attended Ahmadiya Primary School and Egba Odeda Secondary School, Odeda, Ogun State. He studied Political Science at the University of Lagos and had a Masters in Public Administration from the same institution.
He enlisted in the Nigeria police December 1, 1981 and was promoted as a Deputy Commissioner of Police on February 1, 2003. He served briefly as Area Commander of Lion Building before he was posted to the SCID, where he was for three years.
He was later transferred to Force Headquarters, Abuja, where he was in charge of the Training Department. His last posting was as Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Administration at Zone 10 Headquarters, Sokoto.
He is survived by two wives and seven children.
