Robbers kill UST student, injure others


A fresh student of Marketing in the University of Science and Technology Nkpolu, Mr Ikechukwu Didi was at the wee hours of Thursday night the 3rd day Feb, 2005 gruesomely killed by armed robbers leaving several others heavily battered.

The robbers at about 3 am penultimate Thursday stormed the residents' a cluster of batchers at Nkakini close, off Ada George road Rumuepirikom beating and collecting items ranging from cash to personal effects. While in operation, they hammered on their victims with impunity leaving each victim in a pool of blood.

From Osa Prince, the robbers allegedly took N7,000, a handset, wrist watch, travel bag and his motorbike key; Temple Igwe they took video CD deck and two bed sheets. Others who were victims of the attack were Ndubuisi from whom they took one thousand naira, a wrist watch and left his head bettered while from Maureen Ododo her salary of N2,000 was collected but she was lucky to be left without battering.

Members of the compound who spoke to the Telegraph said they suspected a vengeance attack. According to them, about four months ago, some body stole a motor bike from a member of the compound but was caught through the information two members of the yard leaked to the police, they claimed that soon after the police bailed the guy, he came to the compound and quarreled them threatening retaliation.

They further claimed that all the boys attacked in the raid were the ones who frontally attacked the alleged motorcycle thief. They went on to say that the robbers when they came that night asked after the owner of that stolen bike and from one of them they also asked where he comes from.

Piecing these together they alleged the attackers must be the bike robbers gang.

One of the victims slipped through the back and called the police at Kala station who responded immediately but narrowly missed them. Some of the police who took the back way exchanged fire with them, but unfortunately could not gun down any of them.

The DPO promised that they would do their best to track down the hoodlums. The boy body has been deposited at the Military Hospital Mortuary pending investigations.
