Restore Fayose's security, commissioner asks IG

The Inspector General of Police, Mr Sunday Ehindero, has been urged to restore forthwith the security details of embattled Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, to ensure total restoration of peace and good governance in the troubled state.

The Inspector General of Police, Mr Sunday Ehindero, has been urged to restore forthwith the security details of embattled Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, to ensure total restoration of peace and good governance in the troubled state.

Fayose had gone underground on the eve of his purported impeachment earlier this week, citing threat to his life and likely disruption of public order as reasons for his withdrawal from the public.

In the aftermath of the impeachment saga, his deputy, Mrs Abiodun Olujimi, had had her security team restored after she challenged the exercise by the state lawmakers in court. She has since been asserting herself as the substantive deputy governor, acting for her principal, whom she claimed was on leave.

But making a case for his boss last night, the state Information Commissioner, Mr Gboyega Oguntuase said: "since the security of the deputy governor had been restored and since the validity of the impeachment had been eroded by the constitution, Fayose deserves to have his security men back.
"Strictly speaking, none of them (Fayose and Olujimi) has been impeached. And in actual fact, the swearing-in of the Speaker as governor was non-existent in the eyes of the law.

"There was a subsisting injunction restraining him (Friday Aderemi) from presenting himself to be sworn-in. The court ordered that the status quo be maintained pending the hearing of the motion on notice. With the consensus of opinion in Nigeria, Fayose in the eyes of the law is still the governor and Olujimi, the deputy. If the security of the deputy is restored, do that of the governor too in the spirit of fairness," Oguntuase contended.
