Plateau: INEC stays action on by-election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Tuesday announced the suspension of plans to conduct by-elections to fill alleged vacancies in the Plateau House of Assembly.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Tuesday announced the suspension of plans to conduct by-elections to fill alleged vacancies in the Plateau House of Assembly.

Seats of 14 members of the Assembly were initially declared vacant by INEC, with a notice to conduct by-elections on October 28 to fill them.
INEC said it was staying action following an injunction restraining it from conducting the election.

INEC's statement, signed by Pastor Segun Adeogun, Director of Public Affairs, reads: "Sequel to the previous press release on the state of affairs in Plateau State, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was on 16th October, 2006 served with the court processes by the 14 affected members of the Plateau State House of Assembly seeking orders to stop the commission inter alia, from conducting by-election into their seats.

"In the light of the above development and consistent with the rule of law, INEC has decided to stay action on the conduct of the by-elections pending the outcome of the application before the court."
