The parents of a five-year old boy, who was killed by a driver in Ketu area of Lagos State on Saturday, are still at loggerheads with the driver and his family over the incident.

Our correspondent learnt that the parents were insisting that the driver should be prosecuted while members of the driver's family were making overtures to settle the matter amicably.

The driver, Lanre Onakoya, was driving a Toyota Diana truck with registration number BF 362 AKD at the time of the accident.

It was alleged that the driver inadvertently ran over the boy as he made to avoid a pothole on the road.

But the driver claimed that the boy suddenly dashed across the road.

He stated that although he quickly applied the brakes, it was too late as the truck hit and ran over him. The victim lived with his parents on Awonusi Street, Ketu.

After the accident, neighbours and passers-by tried to save the boy's life, but after they checked the boy's pulse, it was discovered that he had died. There was pandemonium and rage as youths in the area attempted to attack the driver.

Other people made efforts to pacify the youths and persuaded them not to take the law into their hands.

The police at Ketu were alerted and a team of policemen was drafted to the scene to control the situation.

Spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, Mr. Olubode Ojajuni, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on Monday.

Ojajuni, a deputy superintendent of police, said the police were not concerned with any negotiation between the parties, adding that they would do their own work as security and law enforcement agents.
