NIPOST set to adopt modern technology

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) is set to adopt modern technology, in order to keep abreast with other developed technologies in the world.

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) is set to adopt modern technology, in order to keep abreast with other developed technologies in the world.

The Area Postal Manager of NIPOST, Enugu Territory, Mr Mike Umoh, made this declaration at the 2006 World Postal Day celebration and customer's forum.

He said his agency was aware of the improvement in information technology of NIPOST to reach everyone, everywhere. According to the postman, through NIPOST's post cash, one could transfer or receive money instantly in all post offices nationwide. Umoh explained that the Post Cash was an on-line or electronical means of money transfer through the post office.

Umoh also advised that customers of NIPOST should be mindful of the source of the postal stamp they bought for stamp duty; adding that NIPOST or its accredited postal agencies were the only source through which postal stamps could be obtained.

Delivering a lecture at the ceremony, the Zonal Manager of News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Enugu Zonal Office, Mr Alex Gbenimacho, pointed out that NIPOST's aim of reaching everyone, remained a herculean task to facilitate the exchange of goods and information between people.
He, however, noted that Nigerians have witnessed steady improvement in the services of NIPOST, especially as it concerned the speed of mail delivery.

Gbenimacho also called for the refurbishment of post office, while expanding to unreached areas in other to achieve Universal Postal Union (UPU) standards.
'NIPOST should also avoid falling into the temptation of modernising facilities, without adequate attention to training and retraining of its workforce."
