How Rev King's burnt church member died - Pathologist tells court

A church member, Ann Uzor allegedly set ablaze by the founder and General Overseer (GO) of the Christian Praying Assembly (CPA), Emeka Ezeugo a.k.a. Reverend King, died following severe burns suffered on July 22.

A church member, Ann Uzor allegedly set ablaze by the founder and General Overseer (GO) of the Christian Praying Assembly (CPA), Emeka Ezeugo a.k.a. Reverend King, died following severe burns suffered on July 22.

The pathologist that examined the remains of the deceased, Dr Sunday Soyemi gave the information on Thursday while testifying in the murder trial of King by Justice Joseph Oyewole of Lagos High Court, sitting in Ikeja.

Led in evidence by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Lagos State, Bola Ighile, Soyemi said the autopsy he conducted on Ann revealed a first degree burn which is rated 65 per cent.
According to the witness, a burn of 50 per cent is fatal and the chances of survival is very slim.

Hence, Ann had no chance of surviving with 65 per cent degree burn.
Describing the parts of the deceased consumed by fire, Soyemi said: "She was burnt from head to toe which we calculated as 65 per cent degree. She was burnt on the face, chest, lower abdomen, laps, hands.
"She died as a result of loss of body fluid, which was caused by the severe burn," he said.

Ann's younger brother, Ifeanyi Uzor, who was also a prosecution witness told the court that the news of his sister's injury was brought to him in his office on August 6, at Ilasamaja by some members of CPA church.
Uzor said he and his father rushed to the Faith City Hospital where they met Ann on sick bed. "She was just crying. She called me and asked me to bring my hand. She held my hand and asked if I was with my phone because she wanted to tell me something which I should record. I said yes.

"Then she said she was sorry. She said Reverend King has killed her. She said she might not survive. So she narrated the whole story to me."
Testifying further, the witness said that his late sister later told him that she was living with Rev. King and she warned him not to visit her there because it was risky. Speaking further, Uzor said that he was beaten and thrown out of the CPA premises when he went to search for his sister because he was not an ordained member.

On his father's membership of the controversial church, Uzor said: "my father became an ordained member in order to see his only daughter."
In his testimony, Dr Chukwuemeka Okafor who admitted Ann on July 22 into Faith Hospital said the deceased was brought to the hospital about midnight.
According to Okafor, Ann's condition when she was brought to the hospital was critical.
"She has burnt from head to toe and I observed fuel was smelling on her body. She was burnt on the head, upper limb, lower limb which we assessed and rated 70 per cent degree," he said.
