NO fewer than 35 Nigerians were yesterday repatriated from Dublin, Ireland, for immigration-related offences. The deportees were brought into the country in a chartered flight which touched down at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos at exactly 7:00 a.m.
On arrival, the deportees were received by police and immigration personnel, after which they were transferred to Alagbon.
The deportees would not volunteer any information on the cause of their deportation, as they were barred from entertaining questions.
Similarly, four passengers were stopped from travelling out of the country yesterday for allegedly using forged passports.
The four passengers, two children and two women, were turned back at the boarding gate while trying to board an Afriqiyah flight to London.
According to a source, the suspects were immediately detained by the airline officials, who later handed them over to the police for investigation.
Meanwhile, work has commenced on the refurbishing of the presidential lounge of the Murtala Mohammed Airport.
The renovation work being executed by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is to give the lounge a facelift.
At press time yesterday, all the lounges had been stripped of their contents, including furniture, rugs and other items, to pave way for re-painting and changing of the ceilings.
As a result of the on-going renovation, personalities, especially state governors who patronise the presidential wing of the airport, now use the protocol section of the building for the time being.
Vanguard gathered yesterday that even the protocol section, press centre and SSS room would also be affected by the renovation efforts expected to take a minimum of three months to conclude.
