Obasanjo, Atiku feud signposts rotten presidency -Rep

A member of the House of Representatives, Prof. Sola Adeyeye, has said that the ongoing feud between President Olusegun Obasanjo and Vice-President Atiku Abubakar is a reflection of a rotten presidency.

A member of the House of Representatives, Prof. Sola Adeyeye, has said that the ongoing feud between President Olusegun Obasanjo and Vice-President Atiku Abubakar is a reflection of a rotten presidency.

Adeyeye told our correspondent in Lagos on Wednesday that the development had demonstrated that corruption was rampant in the Presidency.

The lawmaker added that what the country was witnessing now was a tip of the iceberg.

He said, " The report we are getting is only about past transgressions. And I know that they (Obasanjo and Abubakar) will be extremely careful, so that there will be no transgression in the next one year.

"This is because they know that they are being watched. They are also afraid of each other as they are now hiding cheques.

"I am very happy about what is going on between the two of them. And I do hope and pray that if there are more transgressions that have not been revealed, they will reveal them, so that Nigerians can see how rotten the political class is and how rotten the Presidency really is.

"Because how many democracies in the world do we find the president and the vice-president trading allegations of most egregious and wanton act of profane corruption?"

The lawmaker advised Nigerians to think twice before voting for the next president.

Commenting on who was telling the truth among the President‘s spokespersons and those of the vice- president, Adeyeye said, " I think it is like a story of a six blind men that went to touch the elephant and each one is describing the aspect that he is touching.

"I believe that Obasanjo and Abubakar are saying the truth; that what we have is the most egregious corruption in high places; that the Presidency has lost its moral ground.

"The office of Mr. President is not just an exalted political office, it is also an ethical platform. That platform has been seriously eroded."

On the call for the resignation of Obasanjo and Abubakar over the matter, Adeyeye said that could only happen in a decent or ideal society.

He said, " If this thing had happened in a sane society, the shame of it all would have forced the president and his vice to resign."

The lawmaker also berated the political class. He said they lacked the integrity to throw in the towel when the occasion demanded.

"But you know that Nigerians leaders are an extremely shameless lot. So I don‘t expect that either of them will resign," he said.

Proffering solution on the way out of the present mistrust between the two leaders, Adeyeye said the best way was to endure them till 2007.

He also ruled out the impeachment option on the grounds that vested interests at the National Assembly would work against it.
