Transparency International refutes report indicting Nigerian president


Transparency International (TI), the global organization leading the fight against corruption worldwide has refuted a story published in a Nigerian daily to indict Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.

ABUJA, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Transparency International (TI), the global organization leading the fight against corruption worldwide has refuted a story published in a Nigerian daily to indict Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.

TI said in a statement issued from its Berlin headquarters and made available here on Sunday that the report attributed to its official Miklos Marschall by the daily was completely false.

The said official never made such a statement, it said.

"It is entirely false that Mr. Marschall stated that Obasanjo let us down," the statement said, noting that the TI official did not say either "it is demoralizing for us at TI that his being at the head of the government has not solved the corruption problem in Nigeria."

TI, therefore, demanded a retraction of "this irresponsible and inaccurate article from the Nigerian daily." Enditem
