Former councillor docked over fake naira notes


A 31-year-old former councillor representing Bazalli Ward in Dass Local Government has been arraigned before a Chief Magistrate's Court for allegedly being in possession of counterfeit N1000 notes.

A 31-year-old former councillor representing Bazalli Ward in Dass Local Government has been arraigned before a Chief Magistrate's Court for allegedly being in possession of counterfeit N1000 notes.

The accused person, Adamu Yahaya, was said to have gone to Kasuwa Waya section of the Muda Lawal market in Bauchi to buy rice with one of the fake currency notes when luck ran out on him.

He was said to have bought rice worth N1000 from a woman in the market and paid with the money which unfortunately for him did not miss the eagle-eye of the woman.
The unidentified woman, who immediately discovered that the N1000 note was counterfeit, raised an alarm which attracted other sellers in the market.
Adamu was immediately searched thoroughly by the angry mob and 47 other pieces of fake N1000 notes were found on him.

The discovery provoked anger among the mob and he was almost lynched but for the quick intervention of policemen who rescued and took him to the station.
According to police prosecutor, Mr Danladi Inkasu, the accused person committed an offence punishable under section 366 and 3 of the Penal Code law.

When the charge was read to Adamu, he pleaded not guilty .The magistrate, Aliyu B. Usman granted him bail of N150, 000 with one surety. The case has been adjourned till October 16, 2006.
