Residents of Gusau, the Zamfara state capital were thrown into mourming at the weekend as about 80 people lost their lives when the Gusau Dam collapsed, leading to a flood disaster.

Also about 5,000 people are feared rendered homeless after their houses were submerged by the heavy down pour in the early hours of Saturday at Bayanmakabarta, Danbedi, Assibitin Shagari, Gangaren kwata and Birnin Ruwa in the Gusau metropolis.

Daily Sun gathered that over 500 houses and 3000 domestic animals were lost to the flood disaster which has been described as Zamfara Tsunami.

Speaking at the scene of the incident, the ward head of Birnin Ruwa area, Alhaji Muhammadu mai Unguwa, said it was the first of it kind since the history of the state saying: "We lost about 80 people and more than 5,000 are now homeless".

Governor Ahmad Sani (Yarima) who was outside the state when the incident occurred rushed back immediately and visited the Dam site and homes of the victims, where he ordered the immediate relocation of victims to Birnin Ruwa Secondary School.
Briefing reporters, the governor who shed tears announced a government donation of one million naira and a personal donation of 50 bags of rice as relief materials towards rehabilitation of the victims.
