Cult killing: Five students arrested in Osun

No fewer than five persons have been arrested by the police in connection with last Monday's killing of two students of the Osun State Polytechnic, Iree.

No fewer than five persons have been arrested by the police in connection with last Monday's killing of two students of the Osun State Polytechnic, Iree.

Investigation by our correspondent showed that the suspects had given the police clues towards unravelling the case.

It was gathered on Sunday, in Osogbo, that the students, believed to belong to secret cults, had fled Iree for fear of being arrested by the police.

Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer for the state command, Mr. Joshua Olayemi, said he was yet to ascertain the actual number of students arrested.

He said, 'Some students picked in the course of investigations have given valuable information. We are on top of the situation."

A reliable police source disclosed to our correspondent that among the five arrested students were some of the leaders of various secret cults in the institution.

The Governing Council of the institution, on Sunday, condemned what it described as misrepresentation of facts by some national newspapers (not The PUNCH) in their reports.

A statement by the institution's registrar, Mr. J. A. Akande, said only one student was beheaded and the other killed by yet-to-be-identified assailants.

Akande said the reports, which claimed three students were beheaded, were a misrepresentation of facts, adding that one student escaped the attack.

The statement said the governing council had set up a panel of enquiry to investigate the killings and make recommendation within one week.
