Detectives at the Owerri urban Police station, Owerri, Imo State capital, are having grey-hair over the murder of a businessman, Mr. Pius Obi Nnadi few hours after he was released on bail from police state on April 20, 2006.
Detectives at the Owerri urban Police station, Owerri, Imo State capital, are having grey-hair over the murder of a businessman, Mr. Pius Obi Nnadi few hours after he was released on bail from police state on April 20, 2006.
Obi Nnadi was arrested by the police on that fateful day over 1000 blocks he allegedly bought. He was said to be owing a balance of N30,000 out of N50,000, being the total cost of the blocks.
The block seller was said to have reported to the police that the late Nnadi was owning him N20,000. The police arrested and detained him at the police station. He was later released on bail with a promise to pay the said amount the next day. He did not live to see the next day.
The deceased was shot to death by unknown gunmen who came with a motorbike.
The wife of the deceased told Daily Sun that she heard that her husband had a quarrel with a man he was owing.
"I learnt that after the quarrel, the man went to the police station, Owerri and brought in some policemen who arrested him. He was released on bail the same day at about 6:pm I did not see him in the house after he had closed for the day," she said.
According to Mrs. Nnadi, "the following morning, I learnt that the police came to his shop with his identity card demanding to know anybody who could identify him, saying that he was shot by unknown assailants."
She called on the police to investigate the matter and bring to book those responsible for the death of her husband.
'I trust that the police will do their best to bring the culprits to justice," she said.
In a petition to the assistant inspector general of police, Zone 9, Umuahia, Mazi Francis Nnadi, implored the police chief to use his good offices to ensure that justice was done on the matter.
Mazi Nnadi alleged, in his petition dated May 1, 2006, that investigation on the matter by the Imo State Police Command, has been grossly inadequate and shoddy.
