EFCC Chairman, Nuhu Ribadu, says the commission has uncovered plans by some political office holders to defect to foreign countries before the end of their tenure. Ribadu, through his director of operations, Mr Ibrahim Lamurde, told participants at the defence advisers annual conference today in Abuja that the politicians included a state governor.
Abuja - EFCC Chairman, Nuhu Ribadu, says the commission has uncovered plans by some political office holders to defect to foreign countries before the end of their tenure. Ribadu, through his director of operations, Mr Ibrahim Lamurde, told participants at the defence advisers annual conference today in Abuja that the politicians included a state governor.
He said that the plans were uncovered when a serving state governor who had accumulated his annual leaves since he assumed office decided to use it as a cover to sneak out of the country. According to Ribadu, such a governor and other office holders say they will not wait for the 2007 elections, not to talk of handling over to their successors, before leaving the country.
He explained that the governor (name withheld) had before the interception of the commission, planned to defect in December this year under the cover of proceeding on his accumulated leaves. According to the EFCC boss, the said governor has even penciled down all officers under him for immediate redeployment to various agencies in his state.
Ribadu said that the commission had directed for the cancellation of the visas of all governors to prevent them from fleeing the country after their tenure. He named Ghana, Benin Republic and Sierra Leone, as countries where most fraudstars carry out their '419" activities.
Ribadu said that the commission in conjunction with the Interpol was perfecting plans to conduct an awareness programme outside the country against money laundering. He urged the defence advisers to assist the commission to enable it achieve its objectives.
