A ghastly motor accident that occured Friday at the Lagos end of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway has claimed the life of one Rev. Nkwazeme Chris of Victory Christian Church, near Trade Fair complex.
A ghastly motor accident that occured Friday at the Lagos end of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway has claimed the life of one Rev. Nkwazeme Chris of Victory Christian Church, near Trade Fair complex.
The accident, according to FRSC officials, was caused by potholes in the middle of the expressway. He said the vehicle lost control after running into the pothole, scaled the median and then crushed a billboard and landed in the river below.
The pastor, it was learnt, died on the spot, even before help could get to him. But Sunday Sun learnt that the other surviving occupants of the ill-fated vehicle were rushed to the hospital. At the weekend, doctors were battling to save their lives.
At the time of the accident, the late reverend was still wearing his cassock, an indication that he was either on his way to a function or was returning from one.
And painfully, the late cleric, according to observers, may have wedded not long ago as photographs retrieved from the scene of the accident suggest so.
Regular users of the road confirmed that there had been several accidents at the spot, due to the pothole. They blamed the federal government for the series of accidents, saying they were avoidable fatalities.
An official of the Road Safety commission said that reports of the bad portion of the road were regularly being sent to the ministry regretting that nothing had been done.
Friday's accident is just another statistic of the growing list of lives that have been lost at that spot. That portion of the road has been a notorious spot for unwary travelers on the expressway. Countless number of trailers have been derailed.
The FRSC official complained of the lack of basic rescue tools like divers and other equipments to assist accident victims.
As at press time Friday, local divers where busy searching the pond in the hope of rescuing other occupants.
