Following the submission by the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission, Prof. Peter Okebukola, that Nigerian universities are overcrowded, a report by the Peace Education Centre, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, said over 2,000 non-students reside on the campus of the university.

Speaking with our correspondent in an interview on Tuesday, the Director of the centre, Dr. Vincent Makanju, said the preponderance of non-students living on the campus was one of the causes of students' unrests.

According to Makanju, most of the non-students had been rusticated for certificate forgery, academic incompetence and acts of brigandage.

He noted that such illegal students lived among bona fide students without the knowledge of their parents and guardians.

Regretting that bona fide students did not possess the capacity to identify illegal students on campus, Makanju said the magnitude of illegal students was a threat to the peace of the institution.

He said the university, in the new semester, would come up with strategies of identifying fake students even as he added that such students would be ejected from halls of residence.
