ACD denies talk with Atiku on mega party formation

The Advanced Congress of Democrats (ACD) has denied reports on the involvement of Vice-President Atiku Abubakar in its plans for the formation of a mega party toward 2007 general elections.

The Advanced Congress of Democrats (ACD) has denied reports on the involvement of Vice-President Atiku Abubakar in its plans for the formation of a mega party toward 2007 general elections.

Reacting to some newspaper reports on its mega party formation plans, the ACD denied ever holding any meeting with Vice-President Atiku on the issue.

In a statement signed by its Media and Publicity Committee Chairman, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party described the press reports as sheer speculation and evil machinations of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to scuttle the mega party plans.
The ACD said it would be politically naïve for it to involve a top leader of the PDP like Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in its strategic plans and negotiations.

It said that while it will keep its doors open to defectors from other parties, it would jealously guard its loins until such defectors publicly declare for ACD. 'Never will ACD open up its flanks to politicians who are not in its membership list," the party declared.

ACD said it appreciated the contribution of the media to the emergent democratic dispensation but appealed against unnecessary speculation and falsehood, adding that the media still has a great role to play for the survival of democracy in Nigeria.
