THE perceived tight security at the presidential lounge of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, was pierced by an unspecified number of armed robbers whose leader attempted to seize a gun from an Airforce officer on duty.
The attempted robbery, according to sources, took place in the early hours of Tuesday. Some officials of the foreign affairs on duty were said to be panic stricken.
NigerianTribune, learnt that around 2 a.m., the gang leader headed straight to the security post where he attempted to snatch the rifle from the duty officer who strongly resisted this and overpowered the intruder.
Before the officer could recover from the confrontation, the suspected robber jumped the low fence and bolted, forcing the security men who were called to the scene to comb the VIP premises for the intruder and his gang.
It was reported that during the search, a man believed to be a lunatic was nabbed by the security men and he is currently detained at the Airforce Base, Ikeja, Lagos.
Officials were unwilling to comment on the issue, just as security has been beefed up at the presidential lounge, used often by the president and other top government functionaries.
