Professor Edet Iwok, president of Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (Anan) has urged members of the professional body to join president Olusegun Obasanjo in the fight against corruption.
Iwok who said this in Lagos last week at the induction ceremony of 260 new members into the association said that if professional accountants fail to fight corruption they would be letting the nation down.
He said accountants, as the custodians of financial records, must shun corruption in all its ramifications. According to Iwok, "An accountant should not allow himself to succumb to pressures to be fraudulent in the course of doing the job. We thank God, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is around now and we do not expect any Anan member to be caught in the web of corruption."
He urged the new members to be undaunted in their effort to do what is right without any fear of attack. "Anan lays great emphasis on professional ethics, which is a major subject in the association s examination syllabus."
Iwok explained that because of the dynamic environment, a professional accountant must be very responsive to changes by updating his knowledge and skills that will help them perform to international standard.
He added that the newly- inducted members had spent not less than seven years in practice to become members and had passed the three elements of knowledge, experience and integrity (KEI)
Iwok urged the new members to be confident because, according to him, "Nobody can operate professionally unless he has confidence in himself. You can create confidence by reading and knowing what you ought to know you should have the data and the facts."
He informed the new members that the association has the Mandatory Continuing Professional development (MCPD) programme more than once in a year, which he said, is compulsory that the new members attend.
Iwok announced that the next MCPD would come up in Osun State from September 18 to 21, 2006, while the last for the year would be held in Sokoto from December 4 to 7, 2006.
Earlier in his welcome address, Sir Peter Ibekwe, registrar/CEO of the association, urged the new members not to fail in paying the annual subscription, which the association depends on for running the secretariat staff and payment of staff salary.
While congratulating them for meeting the requirement for membership of the association, Ibekwe reminded them that they need self-confidence to be able to defend their position as certified national accountants.
He advised them to study carefully the rules and regulations of the association so that they would not go against those rules
In his speech, Mr. Anthony Nzom, the chairman, membership committee, advised the new members to participate in the MCPD workshops and seminars organised by the association.
Nzom said anyone who fails to participate in such a programme would have the association s certificate withdrawn from him.
