The Girls Power Initiative (GPI) A non-governmental organisation says it has empowered over 680 adolescent girls within its decade of existence.

Prof Bene Madunagu GPI coordinator for Calabar and Uyo centre who said this in an

interview with journalists in Calabar also pointed out that the association in conjunction with the Cross River State government had trained about 256 teachers.

The teachers who were drawn from different schools in Cross River State were expected to impart knowledge acquired on the girls-children in their different schools, she said.

Prof Madunagu said that the organisation has a training centre for girls and also engages in school outreaches in states like Edo, Akwa Ibom, Cross River and Delta as well as organised holiday programmes for the adolescent girls.

The aim, she said was to guide and equip the adolescent girl in matters relating to family life, sexuality and reproductive health and rights and on HIV/AIDS education.

The professor of microbiology who said it is difficult to quantify the gains of GPI to the girl-child pointed out that the goal of GPI was to be in the forefront of the struggle in raising the womanhood from its age, long powerlessness in the family and society.

She said GPI was initiated out of the desire to encourage women to brace to challenges in a practical way what she called some internalised prejudices and discriminatory practices against them and empower them to be useful to themselves.
