BENIN CITY - WORRIED by the incessant clashes between rival cult groups in Nigeria universities and polytechnics,the Benin monarch, Oba Erediauwa has urged the National Association of Seadogs (aka Pyrates) to assist security agencies in flushing out cultism in the society.
He condemned the killing of youths in the name of cultism in higher institutions an other areas and asserted that concerted effort must be made to stem the ugly situation. The Oba made this appeal when the President of the National Association of Seadogs Mr Andrew Onyearu and other members of his Exco paid him a courtsey visit weekend.
According to the Oba 'I get worried when I hear that people have been killed because of cult activities. Most of these people are young men who are supposed to be the future of this nation and it is very sad and unfortunate.I want to appeal to the leadership of this association to assist other security agencies to fight this so that we have a more peaceful society."
Speaking earlier,Mr Onyearu explained that they were in the palace to inform the revered Monarch of the two-day annual convention of the association taking place in Benin City, adding that the two-day convention was for the members to take stock of their activities in the last one year .
Briefing newsmen after the visit,Mr Onyearu debunked the claim in some quarters that the association was a secret cult,stressing that it is a registered association which he said was made up of men and women who had proved themselves in their various fields.
He said 'this is not a secret cult as it is being insinuated.It has been existing for over fifty two years now and we have branches all over the world.It is because all these cult clashes ,struggle for power especially on campuses amongst different groups that Pyrates seized to exist in campuses. This is a responsible organisation that parades responsible men in the society.Most of our members are government officials and security agents".
