Kaduna State women have been selected among the beneficiaries of the Women Fund for Economic Empowerment (WOFEE) loan scheme, which is a micro-credit scheme that is aimed at boosting the economic power of women.

Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs. Maryam Ciroma who made the disclosure during an advocacy visit on Governor Ahmed Makarfi at the Government House, Kaduna said other arrangements are also being made to provide food processing machines to women cooperative groups this year.

She also explained that her visit to Kaduna was aimed at establishing a working relationship with the state government for the purpose of advancing the welfare of women and children in the state. She said, "it is high time we gave the development of women and children the seriousness it deserved."

According to the minister, issues to be addressed include women in politics, women economic empowerment, reproductive health, VVF, maternal mortality and various forms of violence and discrimination against women. Others, she said, are the adoption of the Child Rights Act at the states level, the girl-child labour, hawking, street orphans and other vulnerable children.

However, she expressed satisfaction over the giant strides made by the Kaduna State government in improving the lot of women and children. She further stated that the bold initiative of the state government in establishing a cottage industry for women in each of the local government areas of the state is commendable.

The minister pointed out that even more significant, is the election of two women from the state into the House of Representatives and the appointment of female member to the Federal Executive Council. She therefore hoped that the government will continue to identify with the needs and aspirations of women while ensuring their sustainable political and economic empowerment.
