Iwu reacts to call for resignation

OWERRI - Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Maurice Iwu, reacted sharply to the recent call for his immediate resignation, by the leadership of Orlu Peoples Consultative Assembly (OPOCA), saying it was made out of sheer ignorance.
However, OPOCA leadership says the reaction 'from INEC has further vindicated and strengthened our call on the President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, to immediately relieve Professor Iwu from his post".

Professor Iwu who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Andy Ezeani, in a telephone interview, also explained that the delay was not as if INEC does not want OPOCA or any other group to recall anybody of their choice.
'Before they submitted their documents, other people had done the same. This is a tedious assignment. It is not as if INEC does not want them to recall whoever they wish to recall", Ezeani said.

It was his considered view that everybody or group making such a demand must bear in mind that the entire exercise has to follow due process.
In a release signed by the National President of OPOCA, Chief Samfo Nwankwho made available to Vanguard in Owerri, the group maintained that it is not interested to know whether other people submitted their documents before or after the organization.
'We are rather concerned that 60 days after we submitted 72 volumes of recall signatures, INEC is yet to start the verification process. We are not unaware that the law stipulates that INEC must conclude the recall process 90 days after the submission of signatures", Nwankwo said.
