Effective CBOs, NGOs will curb restiveness - Justice Odili

As part of measures to check the incessant youth restiveness in the Niger Delta region, the wife of the Rivers State Governor, Justice (Mrs.) Mary Odili has advocated the strengthening of community based organisations (CBOs) and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the region.

Justice Odili who said this at the on-going seminar organised by the Nigerian Institute for International Affairs (NIIA) and the Centre for Advanced Social Science (CAS) in Port Harcourt, said that CBO's and NGO's must be strengthened to enable them embark on sensitisation campaign on the dangers of restiveness in the region.

She also stressed that the womenfolk could be encouraged to set up an intervention scheme where youths could be engaged to learn skills that could be useful to them.

The wife of the governor, who is also the founder of The Adolescent Project (TAP) further contended that through the support of the state government, the scheme had reduced the burden of idleness and poverty among the people of the state.

Justice Odili said that, though, TAP had achieved so much in the state a lot still remained to be done, pointing out that multinational corporations and others must assist it in the business of eradicating poverty in the state.

Also speaking, the chairman, Governing Council of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Mallam Abba Dabo said that, the federal government must inject adequate resources into the development of the Niger Delta.

He also called for the dualisation of the East-West road and commended the state governor, Dr. Peter Odili for his commitment to the development of the region.
