IN a month in which robbers killed two police men, one civil defence official and three passersby in Imo, four police escorts from the state police command were again shot dead by robbers yesterday.

The bodies of the slain officers have been deposited at the morgue, according to the command's Public Relations Officer, (PPRO) Isa Mohammed, a Deputy Superintendent of Police.

According to sources, the police officers in company of some bank officials took off from Owerri, capital of Imo State and were heading to its branch in Umuahia, capital of Abia State, in an empty bullion van when the robbers suddenly ran into them, attacking and killing four of them instantly. Some who had serious injuries are receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital.

The robbers later discovered that there was no money in the van.

The van has been recovered and is under police custody according to the source.

Mohammed told The Guardian: "It happened and four of police men died. Their bodies have been deposited in a hospital mortuary."

The Guardian learnt that in the two states, there has been an upsurge of robbery incidents, thus heightening fear among residents in the cities.

Two weeks ago, a bullion van was attacked along Achingali, Obowo Local Council by hoodlums, killing three persons. The robbers carted away undisclosed amount of money.
