Nigeria's foreign minister resigns - full story

It said President Olusegun Obasanjo had accepted her resignation, which had been prompted by a 'compelling need to take care of pressing family issues'.

The sudden resignation of Okonjo-Iweala came barely a month after she was moved from the influential finance portfolio. As finance minister she last year reformed the finance and economic sector and negotiated Africa's biggest debt cancellation -- 18 bln usd.

Obasanjo expressed regret that 'the minister had to leave at this stage of our reform programme, when various measures adopted by this administration were beginning to yield positive results', the government statement said.

Okonjo-Iweala, who joined the cabinet in July 2003 when Obasanjo was returned to office for second term, was the chairperson of the government economic management team. That position was taken away from her this week.
