The police command in Bayelsa State has withdrawn all policemen attached to political appointees from the rank of commissioners and special advisers way down the ladder.
The Commissioner of Police angrily handed down the order recalling all policemen attached to these categories of officials after a report of highhandedness meted against a member of his command by a political appointee.
Inside sources revealed that the police are very bitter over the treatment of one of its men assigned to a serving commissioner in the Bayelsa cabinet (name withheld).
According to what we have heard, the commissioner took an orderly to Abuja, supposedly for an official engagement.
While in Abuja, the commissioner decided to change plan. That change in plan resulted in an oversea trip.
We could not however confirm if the person in question simply acted out of an innate wicked streak or simply in a state of excitement failed to exercise a sense of duty. What is now known is that the said political appointee abandoned the policeman to his fate and vanished into an aircraft on the first lap of the flight out of the country.
Abandoned without any fund, the police orderly decided to hitchhike a ride. The Good Samaritan driver who took him on dropped the armed policeman in Enugu State where once again he was stranded and left to fate to decide his destiny.
While in that state, he established contact with fellow policemen who either did not believe his tale or suspected he may be one of those policemen who connive with armed gangs to rob.
The unfortunate policeman rather than receive compassion was put under arrest and his command in Bayelsa notified of his presence in Enugu.
The command in Bayelsa apparently flew into a rage and ordered that the cop be brought to Bayelsa under armed guard and in handcuffs.
On arrival, the police quizzed the policemen. What they heard further drew angrier reactions from the police high command in the State, which quickly resolved that all men from the force posted to political appointees in the State should be withdrawn at once.
Our information is that the only person in high places with police orderlies at his beck and call in Bayelsa is the Governor, Dr Goodluck Jonathan.
As at the time of filing this report, the police command was yet to rescind the directive, but we learnt that political appointees sobered by the withdrawal of security operatives who guarantee their protection may have began to pile pressure gradually in a bid to assure their own protection.
