Debts totalling N340 million accumulated by Etinan Council in Akwa Ibom from 2002, have been settled, Head of the Council, Mr Aniedi King, has said.
King told our correspondent in Uyo on Monday that the debts included N50 million accumulated salary arrears, N60 million owed to a commercial bank and N200 million owed to contractors.
The council, he said, cleared leaved allowances within the period.
King said the council also cultivated about 200 hectares of cassava.
King identified high wage bill for the 45 primary schools in the area as a major impediment to the council, and noted that, it could do better.
He said the lack of co-operation between councillors and council heads was a problem. King attributed the progress made so far by the council to the co-operation he received from councillors.
