The leadership of the All Nigeria Peoples Party has waded into the impeachment move by the Kano State legislators against the Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Shekarau.

Our correspondent gathered that 24 members of the state legislature held a meeting last week to actualise their plans. They also shopped for four lawmakers to meet the two-thirds constitutional requirement.

Shekarau government‘s alleged misdeed was a N2.4billion fertiliser contract over which had forced the commissioner of local government affairs to resign following protests from the lawmakers.

The ANPP Director of Publicity, Alhaji Ibrahim Modibbo, who confirmed the party‘s intervention, told our correspondent on Tuesday that an emergency national working committee meeting had been scheduled to discuss the matter.

He said the meeting would hold in Maiduguri, with the Borno State Governor, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff, presiding. Sheriff who is the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee.

Modibbo said the party was deeply concerned that the face-off might cause an unnecessary distraction for the 2007 elections.

The National Secretary, Dr. Nya Asuquo, who is now in Maiduguri to discuss the matter with Sheriff, told our correspondent on the telephone that he would also visit Kano from there.

"I will not be able to speak elaborately on the matter until I have returned from Kano. I am going to assess the situation," he added.
