The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Nigeria(ICPAN) rose swiftly, weekend to disown the claim of some ex-members, led by one Mallam Ishak Attohfudi, saying he and other members of his group had been sacked and subsequently expelled from the Institute.
Speaking with newsmen in Kaduna, the Institute's President, Mrs Oge Okeke said their claim over the Institute in a daily newspaper, last week, was nothing short of deceiving the general public that there was a division within ICPAN, adding 'this is not true. The signatory to the said malicious publication is the person of Mallam Attohfudi is no longer known to the Institute."
According to her ,"the addresses of 10 Wushishi House, Kaduna and 18,Olowu Street, Ikeja, Lagos, which they gave as the headquarters and Lagos office respectively of ICPAN are wrong. They are personal addresses. We operate from 8A/9A, Constitution Road, Kaduna as the national headquarters and our Lagos Liaison office is 15 Isheri Road, Ogba, Afix Bus-Stop, Lagos with other numerous offices scattered all over the federation."
In an attempt to put the record straight, she said: ' Mallam Attohfudi's appointment as a one-time registrar of the Institute was terminated on 21 December 2005 and a disclaimer was published to this effect on 31 December 2005 and 6 January 2006 respectively in both New Nigerian and Vanguard newspapers."
She said it was beyond doubt that the two signatories to the false publication were among members expelled as at 20 May 2006, saying their disclaimer was also published in the Daily Sun of 7 July 2006.
Another bone of contention was the termination of the services of the only recognized legal adviser of the Institute, Mrs Funke Aluko-Daniels in the said publication. On this, she said: ' The Institute can never have a different legal adviser for the Board of Regents since the Board of Regents is part of the Institute and not an independent organ."
She argued that the former registrar had boasted in the publication of being in the custody of some documents including CAC certificate and seal belonging to the Institute. This, development, she said, was made possible because as a record officer, he made away with some of the Institute's vital documents when his appointment was terminated. 'Because of this unprofessional conduct till date, his entitlement has not been paid," she said.
She added that the council remained the authentic organ of the Institute responsible for the control and management of the affairs of the Institute as contained in Article Seven(20) of ICPAN's bye-laws. Accordingly 'the Council shall have the control and management of the affairs and business of the Institute. Such council shall act in the name of the institute when it shall be regularly convened by its president after due notice to all the council."
