ABEOKUTA - NO fewer than 59 hoodlums are now in police net following weekend's bloody clash between men of the Ogun State Police Command and butchers from the Lafenwa Abattoir in Abeokuta.
The butchers had stormed the police station Saturday afternoon vandalizing it and beating up the officers on duty in a bid to forcefully effect the release of some of their colleagues who were arrested for being in possession of hard drugs.
Trouble started when men of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) stormed the abattoir, which it said was harboring drug dealers, early Saturday morning and arrested six of the suspected drug dealers.
The NDLEA officials led by the State Commander, Mr. Akin Adesola, had gone to the abattoir with policemen from the State Police Headquarters, Eleweran and arrested the drug dealers, seized eight motorcycles and one taxi believed to belong to some of the dealers who escaped by jumping into the Ogun River.
After taking away the six suspects some of the butchers were said to have mobilized others and stormed the Lafenwa police station where they accused the officers of raiding them without prior warning.
Vehicles in front of the police station were vandalized, while stones, sticks, knives and other dangerous weapons were freely used by the hoodlums before the officers on duty called for reinforcement from the Police Headquarters.
Traffic was brought to a standstill with people in the area running for dear lives while the attack on the station lasted.
Heavily armed policemen were subsequently dispatched to the area to bring the situation under control.
